What is a Breed Ban? Breed bans or Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) is when legislators, either municipal or provincial, enact laws governing what breed of dog their citizens can choose to own. Within those laws, a designation of "dangerous", "vicious" or "prohibited" dog is automatically applied to any dog of the deemed breed whether it is purebred or a mix. Or if it appears to have all the physical characteristics of that breed, it is so deemed by legislators. BSL is, essentially, efforts used to restrict, ban and/or eliminate certain breeds of dogs, purebred or mixed. It can include anything from requiring special licensing of a breed (breed restriction) to the total ban of certain breeds. mild version of tbe ban - you will likely have 3 options: 1. Give up your beloved pet, regardless of the fact that s/he has likely done nothing to warrant this designation. Or 2. Keep your pet muzzled, leashed whenever in public or off your own property, including training classes, veterinary offices, other dog sport activity classes such as flyball or agility. Or 3. Maintain a home owners' insurance policy with a $100,000 up to $1,000,000 liability coverage for your dog, microchip, spay/neuter, muzzle him or her anytime they are outside (even on your own property), build a secured kennel complete with a roof and bottom and padlock, as well as post notice of a "dangerous" dog living on your property. now it is getting more scary - wild verison of the ban - you have only one option: just one option when EVERY SINGLE pit bull in the city/county/state/ limits MUST BE surrendered or confiscated example: Denver's pit bull law prohibits any person from owning, possessing, keeping, exercising control over, maintaining, harboring, or selling a pit bull in the City and County of Denver. A pit bull is defined in the ordinance as any dog that is an American Pit Bull Terrier, an American Staffordshire Terrier, a Straffordshire Bull Terrier, or any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of any one or more of these breeds. So you might actually consider yourself lucky, if everything what you have to do is to maintain a home owners' insurance policy with a $100,000 up to $1,000,000 liability coverage and keep your dog locked on your property always and for ever - this is the best case scenerio - and any of this sounds fair? BSL is a violation of our human rights, and it is a violation of animal rights as well. Responsible dog owners should always have the right to own whatever breed of dog they wish. We have earned that right. Responsible dog owners should never have to pay the price of saying good bye to their furred friends and companions simply because those who hold the power turn a blind eye to the scientific facts and instead chose the fiction spewed out relentlessly by the media. We strongly believe that instances of bad dog behaviour are an issue of irresponsible human ownership rather than inherent dog nature. We believe that media sensationalism has made the problem seem worse than it really is. They point out that some of these policies have been randomly or illogically thought out, and are often implemented and enforced capriciously or inconsistently. In their view, an alternative to Breed Specific Legislation might be the consistent enforcement of existing dog laws, or the creation of new breed-wide regulations or requirements where needed. suggested alternative to breed bans - Punish the Deed, Do Not Punish the Breed HSUS Statement on Dangerous Dogs and Breed-Specific Legislation click to find out how YOU can help fight BSL |
